"The series take its title from the Latin word for prescience, its literal translation being 'before knowledge.' Pierce sees his characters as prophets whose foresight has been dulled by the siren song of a whiskered catfish queen. She rules the Mississippi, lulling her subjects (including rats, foxes and wolves) into a quiet acceptance of their river fate. And once under her spell, they no longer seek a destiny beyond its miry shore. This imaginative work forms a moral tale about apathy, personifying for Pierce the Midwestern city of St. Louis."
– Laura C. Mallonee, Arts Writer and Editor
About the work, Ben says, "For many people, imagination is their only escape from circumstance. When one lives in a world quick to snuff out wonder and promise, it becomes necessary to create your own. These images are the world as I choose to see it." Benjamin Pierce attended Washington University where he received his BFA in illustration and graphic design. He was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri and now lives on the city's South Side.
